Santis 10yo – That Boutique-y Whisky Company.

Another new whisky hits the shelf in the form of this Swiss offering Santis 10 year old from That Boutiquey Whisky Company, and I hear you all asking who or what is Santis… Well I had to look it up and ask a few questions because this is a new name to me.

Located in Appenzell, Switzerland, it seems the family started brewing way back in the 18th century when the Locher family first brewed in Oberegg before taking over the brewery in Appenzell, where they still operate the brewery as well as the distillery.

In 1999 master brewer Karl Locher started to distill the Santis whisky again, in 2002 the first spirit was brought to market before in 2010 Jim Murray selects one of the Santis malts as the European whisky of the year 2010..

This single malt is brought to us as a new release from That Boutiquey Whisky Company

10 Year Old Santis – Batch 1

Batch 1 has an outturn of 916 bottles and has been bottled at 51.4% abv,  this is of course naturally coloured and NCF..

Nose.. A real sweetness greets the nose with burnt toffee, vanilla and caramel enticing you in further, candied orange, butterscotch popcorn, cinder toffee, liquorice, chocolate and a hint of coffee surface with a real subtle pine aroma in the background.

Palate.. Dried fruits, marzipan, plum pudding and cinnamon buns just take this into sherry territory, chocolate, orange peels and a hint of tobacco really give this some depth.

Finish.. Spicy and dark..

Thoughts.. The first time I tried this I was impressed, this time I’m smitten.. It has that familiarity about it that when you taste it, it just feels like a long lost friend returning from a long long trip..

This has everything I want in a whisky, depth, complexity and a vibrant feel that gives you that familiarity and an urge to pour another once it’s gone..

Try it, I bet you like it, and like me I won’t be surprised if you buy it !!
