Glen Scotia is part of the Loch Lomond group, the distillery can be found in Campbeltown. Parts of the distillery date back to the 1830s, these include the still room and the dunnage warehouses. The distillery produces both peated and non peated expressions, the peated expressions are only produced for around 6 weeks per year though. The master distiller today is John Peterson who has over 40 years experience, and has over seen the emergence of the latest brands the distillery has to offer.. In 2015 the distillery opened a new visitor centre which has a very warm and cosy atmosphere..
Todays review is the Glen scotia ” double cask” is matured in the finest oak barrels before finished in both first fill Bourbon barrels then Pedro Ximenez sherry casks, it is then bottled at 46%abv..
Nose.. Quite sweet at first, lots of vanilla, caramel and toffee notes, a lovely dried fruit aroma starts to emerge pulling along a dark chocolate and orange scent. Apple peel and poached pear and seasoned peaches in syrup make their way to the front before some subtle spices show up..
Palate.. Quite a sweet dry mouth feel, lots of toffee and caramel notes, those Apple flavours are there in abundance, with orange and dried fruits, a little cinnamon kick brings forth some spice while some lovely Honey notes re acquaint you with the sweetness.
Finish.. Full of flavours from the east.. With some subtle oak notes.
Thoughts.. This is a very decent whisky, very well balanced and lots of complexity to it. Those sweet notes mingle with the dried fruit and spices so well. The longer this is left the more it opens up, you get such rich aromas and full on flavours and just as you think you have got to grips with it you find something completely different.. This can be found for around the £35-40 mark.. It is a steal..
Sorren. Thanks for dropping in a sample. bottle ordered. I loved it, but I think you already knew I would.
