Benromach
The Benromach distillery company was founded back in 1898 by Duncan MacCallum and F.W.Brickmann who started construction on the distillery in the same year before starting to produce spirit in 1900, unfortunately due to lack of money the distillery also shut in the same year. In 1911 Benromach was bought by Harvey McNair and company who re-started distilling.
The distillery changed hands a few more times before 1993 when Gordon and MacPhail became the latest name to take control.. Gordon and MacPhail restored the distillery before officially re-opening in 1998 when it was opened by the Prince of Wales.
Benromach Cask Strength
This new 2008 vintage joins the already impressive classic range and what’s even better is the fact they have decided to offer it at cask strength..
Laid to rest in 2008 this latest expression is a direct replacement for the 100 proof and is said to have subtle differences but will still match the high expectations of the loyal followers..

Nose.. An initial mix of smoke and sweetness.. A nice burst of dried fruits soon gives way to a more tropical feel with pineapple, ripe banana and a little candied orange showing up, chocolate and gentle spices mix with toffee, butterscotch and a hint of cherries.
Palate.. A hit of pepper and smoke greets you before those sweeter notes battle their way through.. A little chocolate leads into tobacco leaf, plum, roasted almonds and an earthiness from Manuka honey and a touch of oak..
Finish.. Drying and spicy..
Thoughts.. There is certainly subtle differences but it isn’t a million miles away from what was expected from the 100 proof..
The quality expected from Benromach is there and with a RRP of around £59 it does seem to have jumped a little in price..
Even with the slight increase in price this is still a quality product and will find its way into many a whisky cupboard around the whisky drinkers world..
