Caperdonich 22 year old, batch 5 That Boutique-y Whisky Company

Day 20… As we count down the last few days of this amazing journey through some of the finest offerings That Boutique-y Whisky Company has to offer we come across another sadly closed distillery..

Hailing from Speyside, Caperdonich Distillery was always referred to as the sister distillery to Glen Grant or as it was officially called Glen Grant #2, Both distilleries were at one time actually joined by a pipe line that ran whisky between the distilleries..

Caperdonich distillery was founded in 1898 by the then founders of Glen Grant J & J Grant, the distillery soon closed after only 4 years of production and stayed mothballed until 1965 when it was actually re named from Glen Grant #2 to Caperdonich..

Caperdonich stayed open until 2002 one year after Pernod Ricard had purchased it, unfortunately the Distillery never re opened and was demolished in 2010..

Bottled at 48.6% abv this is naturally coloured and has an outturn of 250 bottles.

Nose.. Initially rather fruity with apples, pear, pineapple and plum notes showing through, then subtle spicy notes of cinnamon, ginger and a tangy citrus peel note show up to the party.. A little struck match note is evident but soon tapers off and leaves a barrel Charing note..

Palate.. A nice sweetness mixes with some dried fruits, citrus and chocolate notes before a touch of Manuka honey, coffee and a hint of citrus bitterness finishes it off..

Finish.. A touch of oak mixes with a lingering sweetness..

Thoughts.. When I first tried this I wasn’t sure but now it’s aired a little ( review from an open bottle ) it really has developed into a wonderful whisky that shows off a really complex, full bodied expression with a fruity attitude..

This is yet again an indication of another distillery sadly closed that now shows loads of promise and will sadly be missed when it could be producing more liquid like this..
