Bunnahabhain 11 year old – batch 5 – That Boutique-y Whisky Company

Day 8 and the Boutiquey whisky advent calendar is sending us to Islay..

As the song says

“ You can reach me by airplane,

You can reach me by caravan,

You can reach me by sail boat

i don’t care how you get here, just get here if you can”

Well that’s how most people see the Isle of Islay.. Just get there if you can !!

Founded back in 1881 the Bunnahabhain distillery sits on the sound of Islay overlooking Jura, battered by sea spray and coastal winds there is no wonder the whisky usually offers up plenty of coastal notes for its fans to savour..

Today’s review is an 11 year old Bunnahabhain, this is batch 5 from That Boutiquey whisky Company, bottled at 49.5% abv this has an outturn of 1091 bottles, is of course naturally coloured and NCF..

Nose..Initially sweet with caramel, toffee and a hint of honey before poached pear, fresh apple peel and a little candied orange shows up.. Salty sea spray reminds you of the location while a hint of exotic fruits and soft spices round off the nose..

Palate.. A soft kick of ginger and cinnamon leads into vanilla and toffee notes before sugar coated almonds, salted caramel and the faintest hint of barrel Charing take this whisky into overdrive..

Finish.. Subtly long..

Thoughts.. Another dram that tells a story of its origins, one that leads you on a journey with every sip..

The true test of a whisky is when it transports you into its own little world and this somehow does that.. It has plenty of depth and complexity but at the same time it always seems to keep a little back and offers up intrigue..

This Bunnahabhain 11 year old batch 5 is available at Master of Malt for £73.95
