It’s raining grain.. Ok let me explain, at the time of writing this review here in the uk we are in the middle of the harvest season, it only seems right I review a single grain whisky !
That Boutique-y Whisky Company is at the moment bottling some stupendous single grains !! And this North British is no exception ! How do I know ? Well luckily I have already tried it and instantly bought the bottle in order to review..
The North British Distillery Company was established in 1885 by Andrew Usher, William Sanderson and John Crabbie. They built the Distillery on the outskirts of Edinburgh and started producing spirit in the September of 1887, with just under 1 million litres produced in the first calendar year and 3.6 million litres within the first full year of production.
Like so many of the distilleries the war affected production with several years of low production the distillery did not return to full production until 1955, a few years later ( 1961 ) the production levels were hitting 13 million litres.
As with most of the spirit produced at grain distilleries North British grain whisky is sold on for blending, luckily these days whisky fans are starting to see the importance and value in single grain and blended grain whiskies..
That Boutiquey Whisky Company amongst a few others are releasing some superb tasting and great value for money Grain whiskies, and with the increase of popularity these grain whiskies are now maturing in far better quality cask as the general idea behind grains was to always use well used casks in order to produce a neutral spirit as to not influence the single malts too much..
So on to today’s review..
This North British 27yo is bottled at 56.3% this is batch 3 from the Boutiquey stable and boasts an outturn of 760 x 50cl bottles..
Nose.. Incredible!!
There is an instant toffee, vanilla, candy floss and burnt caramel aroma that leads you into a freshly brewed cup of strong black coffee and melting chocolate.. Some nice spicy notes like cinnamon, nutmeg along with a touch of oak appearing in the background.
Palate.. An instant sweetness engulfs the senses with rich vanilla, caramel and cinnamon buns giving you an heavenly feel. A little more of that oak, cinder toffee and butterscotch keep that sweetness developing.. Hints of candied orange, apple peels and a delicate coconut note give this a final flurry..
Finish.. Sweet and spicy..
Thoughts.. What can I say, it’s heavenly !! Grain whisky this good is here to stay, overlook it at your own peril..
So we know some or most grains are not intended to stand alone, some are only fit for blending or adding mixers but when you get a quality single grain like this, pour it, sip it and savour it !!
