English Whisky Company 6yo bottled by Claxton’s.

St George’s Distillery is a truly English whisky produced in the heart of Norfolk and is owned by the English Whisky Company, the Distillery started production relatively recently ( 2006 ) and started releasing whisky in chapters, with the even numbers representing unpeated whisky and the uneven ones generally representing peated expressions. This  review however is one for a single cask released by Claxton’s independent bottlers based in Ripon near York..

Claxton’s is a small family owned business with the belief that quality not quantity is the most important factor to the success they crave and will only release single casks if they believe it warrants the family name to adorn the label.. Over the past few years they have slowly released quality single cask releases onto the market and have seen a real increase in demand for what they are releasing.

2018 promises to be a real interesting year for the company as they look to increase the size of the company and release a lot more expressions Globally, as well as some exciting projects on the horizon the future looks rather bright for the company.

Todays review is for an English whisky, bottled as always at cask strength and naturally coloured with NCF.. The abv is 60.5% and was distilled in 2011 making this a 6yo, matured in a single cask #457 that previously held Rum..

Nose.. A sweetness leads the way with this one, Vanilla, candy floss and butterscotch sweets interact with a tropical fruitiness, Burnt sugar and spices..  A soft floral note rises up with hints of dried fruit and a little chocolate infused with ginger.

Palate.. Youthful and hot.. Initially spicy with a real peppery kick before some tropical fruit and bitter chocolate notes come through, a little citrus and dried fruits play alongside the youthfulness and malty notes.

Finish.. Spicy and lingering.

Thoughts.. Although this does feel young it is still very interesting, the sharpness has almost gone and the rum cask although it has not given this a massive sweetness it has certainly made it intriguing and gives you the urge to investigate it a little more..
