A tripple cask explosion from BenRiach.. What’s not to like about that ? Throw in the fact it’s cask strength and “you had me at hello “
This latest batch 2 Release follows on from the award winning batch 1 which won the silver outstanding award at the international wine and spirit competition in 2016.. To create batch 2 Master Blender Rachel Barrie hand picked casks from 2006,2007 and 2008 with a tripple maturation selection of Bourbon barrels, Oloroso Sherry casks and Virgin oak hogsheads..
Bottled at a cask strength of 60.6%, batch 2 is of course all natural colour and without chill-filtration ..
Nose.. This starts with a real sweetness in the form of Vanilla, toffee and butterscotch before a little cinnamon, ginger and gentle oak lead the way into subtle notes of dates, raisins and plum. Candied orange, apple peels and a soft tobacco note round this off in style.
Palate.. Spices lead the way here with ginger, cinnamon and a soft pepper note that leads into some bitter chocolate notes and a little espresso kick..
Finish.. Bitter oak and spices..
Thoughts.. The nose is the winner in this bottle, it draws you in with its sweetness and seduces your senses before you take a sip and the spices just take over.. The finish for me just lost a little something but if you forget that then it’s a great dram, you will just have to sip a little faster..
Benriach Tripple cask, Cask Strength batch 2..
With thanks to BenRiach for the official sample.
