Glendronach 1995 UK Exclusive

Did someone mention sherried whisky..

It must be Glendronach time again ! Over the last year or so I have really come to love sherried whisky and there is not much better than what Glendronach is releasing, their single casks are just what I’m looking for at the moment and believe me I’ve bought a few recently..

Todays review is from one of the UK exclusive bottles, this is a single cask distilled 21-7-1995 and bottled October 2016 which makes it a 21 yo, this is a single cask #3248 and is from a Pedro Ximenez Sherry Puncheon which yielded just 531 bottles..

This is bottled at a cask strength of 51.8% and is Natural colour and NCF..

Nose.. Soft dark fruits at first but then the aromas just explode.. The dates, figs and ripe plums just dominate along with candied orange, dark treacle, liquorice and dark chocolate.. There is also a typical earthy dunnage warehouse scent with old leather, tobacco and strong black coffee..

Palate.. Surprisingly fresh and youthful.. Those dried fruits certainly dominate the palate with a little sweetness, that earthy note comes through like a manuka honey style with orange marmalade, and soft spices.. The oak eventually shows up and gives a little hint of age but this still feels more youthful.

Finish.. This is where it really shines.. Long and elegant..

Thoughts.. Damn Glendronach, I like this.. I like it a lot.. and once again this single cask sends you in a totally different direction to what you expected.. The 21 yo age statement feels like it’s the wrong way round ( in a very positive way !! )this is so lively with a fantastic array of flavours and aromas.

This whisky has all the hallmarks of a very mature whisky that refused to grow up..
