MACALLAN FINE OAK 12 yo.

Founded in 1824 by Alexander Reid, who was a farmer and school teacher, The  Macallan was one of the first distilleries in Scotland to be legally licensed. Since then, The Macallan has built a reputation as one of the world’s truly great single malts. Starting with Alexander and through the subsequent owners of The Macallan distillery in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and into the present century, The Macallan is recognised for the quality and high prices the product can demand. The Macallan is also one of the most highly collected malts in the world, and can always be found in the movies  such as James Bond…

The Macallan 12yo fine oak is a mixture of American and European sherry casks and American oak bourbon casks. Bottled at 40% abv and has no colour added.

Nose.. Starts off quite delicately with soft dried fruits and vanilla notes before hints of chocolate, butterscotch and candy floss along with cinder toffee, cinnamon and fresh peeled apples.

Palate.. Subtle dates and plums mix with fresh apples, chocolate notes and soft flavours from nectarines and cinnamon can be found hiding in the background.

Finish.. Short with a little oak and soft spices.

Thoughts.. This is one of those malts that won’t make the earth move but you will enjoy every sip.. It has some nice flavours and aromas albeit quite soft.. Can’t help but think this would be better with a little more kick behind it and a few pounds knocked off the rrp..

I would like to thank Steve from the whisky wire and The Macallan for the sample as part of a live tasting on twitter.
