TOMATIN 1995.

So the first review for 2017 is here and what better whisky to review than a Tomatin.. I bought this bottle when first released and for some reason I never got round to doing the review, so when I looked at what to do first it was a no brainer..  My friend Craig keeps telling me I should try it, so here goes..

The Tomatin 1995 is a limited release of just 1,912 bottles ( so unlike some other so called limited releases by others this is actually is pretty limited ) The 1995 was initially matured in traditional American oak before given a ” finishing ” period of 3 years in Oloroso Hogsheads.. Everything about this bottle screams quality, no short term finishing period, very decent packaging and the new style bottle along with  the seal of approval from Craig ( he does love his Tomatin) ..

Bottled at 46% abv and natural Colour..

Nose.. Rich and sweet is my first impression.. lots of syrup and burnt sugar, dark fruits, plums and almonds start to emerge after a few minutes, candied oranges and dark chocolate mingle with subtle oak, coffee and a cherry to top it all off.

Palate.. Subtle spices along with caramel, toffee and vanilla give this a more bourbon feel, the sherry influence is there but not overwhelming. This has a rich feel and a dark side once opened.. Eventually those dark fruits tickle the senses with dark chocolate, aniseed and delicate tobacco notes.

Finish.. Dark and spicy.

Thoughts.. A real delight.. This is not a big sherry monster but more a huggable teddy bear.. You just want to sip and enjoy it all night, a real heart warmer and a true winner.. Tomatin have some real treasures tucked away and this is another one you really need to seek out and try for yourself.. Delicious.
