The tastings are coming thick and fast these days, having just recovered from a truly epic tasting, Steve from ” The Whisky Wire” has teamed up with “Walsh Whiskey” to give us an Irish invasion of sublime whiskey.. A rather well put together tasting pack including some new make spirit at a rather lipsmacking 75.5%abv , the Irish man 12yo single malt, Writers Tears ” copper pot” and writers tears ” red head” was sent for us to sample ..
Walsh whiskey distillery was founded by Bernard and Rosemary Walsh in 1999 at an 18th century estate in County Carlow .. Royal Oak can be found in the South East of Ireland and is thought to be the perfect setting for the distillery with temperate climate and the proximity to the river Barrow. The Distillery has the capacity to produce around 650,000 cases of whiskey each year and has the capacity to store 60,000 casks in its own warehouses..
First up on the night was the New make spirit topping the abv chart at a lovely lipsmacking 75.5%..
My thoughts on this were..
Nose.. Nice floral aromas with a distinct fruity scent, pears, apple peel and heather were the main aromas present.
Palate.. Again lots of fruitiness and floral flavours, stewed apples and pear were again prominent with heather and a subtle zesty flavour lurking in the background..
Second up on the night was the Irishman 12 yo single malt, bottled at 43%.. This is matured in first fill bourbon casks..
Nose.. Vanilla, caramel and delicate spices are the first aromas to hit the nose before floral notes and a touch of oak give it a little balance. After a few minutes it opens up a little more to give more cinnamon,ginger and burnt sugar, hints of Bakewell tart come wandering in..
Palate.. Lots of caramel and toffee notes coat the mouth with cinnamon and ginger bringing the spicy kick, those poached pears, apples and lashings of honey give this a lovely sweetness along with sugared almonds.
Third up was the Writers tears “copper pot” which is bottled at 40% and is matured in American oak Bourbon casks.
Nose.. Apples and Pears and honey give this Nose a wonderful aroma with cinnamon and a touch of lemon.
Palate.. Spicy with a touch of oak and fruit, a little dark chocolate with ginger and almonds give this a shine..
Last up on the night was the Writers tears “Red head” which is bottled at 46% and matured in Oloroso casks..
Nose.. Dates, plums and raisins are first up along with cinnamon and candied orange. Dark chocolate with a touch of vanilla and oak bring up the rear..
Palate.. Not the sherry influence I was expecting.. Quite subtle with more oak and spice at first before the fruit starts to pick itself up and get noticed, some candied orange and dark chocolate again try to bring in the sherry influence..
Thoughts.. All the above showed just how good Irish whiskey actually is and just gives us another slap to remind us to buy more of it.. on the night I found the “Copper pot ” suited me slightly more than the others and although the “Red head ” did not live up to what I expected it was still a very enjoyable dram ! The fault was probably me expecting something it was not ever going to be, I am guessing the sherry casks were re-fill so a more delicate flavour was always on the cards.. I would still buy any of these bottles though because as we all agreed on the night these were all very easy drinking expressions ( maybe a little too easy ) and of course the tripple distillation gives it that lovely “smooth ” feel..
