Girvan 52 Year Old (That Boutique-y Whisky Company)

A few weeks back I attended the whisky lounge festival at York racecourse, during this festival I didn’t get to try too much due to having the privilege of working one of the stalls but a fellow blogger and exhibitor kindly gave me a few samples in order to take away to review and this is one of said samples..

It is not very often you get to try whisky that is an incredible 52years old but that is just what I’m about to do.. The sample is from the independent bottler ” That Boutique-Y Whisky Company”

‘That Boutique-y Whisky Company’ bottles single malts, single grains and bourbons from a variety of renowned distilleries as well as producing award-winning blended malts and blends. These whiskies are adorned with cultish graphic novel-style labels.

So this grain whisky is a single barrel and is NCF,Natural colour and has a cask strength of 51.1%abv..

Nose.. YES… This is on another level.. There is a superb sweetness instantly massaging your senses, it is like sitting at the breakfast table with fresh pancakes covered in the finest maple syrup..  Some lovely caramel and toffee notes, butterscotch and almonds, a little citrus peel and delicate wood spices..

 

Palate.. This just carries on from the nose, everything you expected you’d get, you get!  But it is far more intense.. The sweetness is abundant and the spices are like popping candy in your mouth.. There is a succulent fruity flavour that blends in so well with the spices, soft vanilla and caramel notes..

 

Finish.. Long and graceful..

 

Thoughts.. I have been very lucky over the last year with some of the whisky I have had the pleasure of tasting and this is another that just blows my mind.. Grain whisky is hitting the whisky scene with a Big Bang and this expression is no exception.. Girvan is giving us some really fantastic older grain expressions (and some younger ones) and the grain scene is just getting bigger and bigger, the flavours are just fantastic and can be very complex. This single barrel offering is very balanced and is packed with big hitting flavours..
