INVERGORDON 28yo Single Grain Whisky

I once again have the pleasure in tasting  a bottle of single grain whisky in order to review. This Invergordon 28yo is straight out of the Douglas Laing  stable so quality should be assured..  Douglas Laing is a well established company dating back to 1948, and is now into  a third generation,  this family owned and run businesses just keeps going from strength to strength, Fred Laing the CEO of the company is one of those guys that has passion beyond the norm and this rubs off onto daughter Cara who’s passion is just as strong and shows in the way they are leading this company forward..

Over  the last year or so I have managed to buy quite a few very good expressions from Douglas Laing so when I noticed this bottle on the website I knew it would be quality so I didn’t hesitate to buy it, the bottle  was actually bought to be part of another tasting that I had planned to host but the theme changed so I get to drink the whole bottle for a change..

 

So this bottle is one from a single refill butt distilled at Invergordon in August 1987 and bottled in November 2015, the cask produced  490 bottles with NCF, natural colour and bottled at 56.5%abv..

 

Nose..  Starts with quite a sweetness, baked pear along with ripe banana and honey, vanilla and toffee apple, cinnamon and a little ginger mix quite nicely with soft oaky notes.. Gentle oak notes mingle perfectly with subtle coffee and butterscotch notes.

 

Palate.. Again quite a sweet start with caramel and butterscotch, candied oranges and natural wood spices coating the mouth.

 

Finish.. Lingering oak with a twist of spice..

Thoughts.. Well they did it again.. I know when I buy from these guys I am going to get quality and once again they delivered.. This grain whisky is exactly the reason I want to taste more grain whisky, it is so easy to drink and shows a lot of complexity as well as being very well balanced and full of glorious flavours.. Anyone who tells you grain whisky is sub standard has not tried whisky like this.. Grain whisky can be exceptional and for the age it is extremely good value… Overlook it at your own peril !
