AUCHENTOSHAN 14 ( Douglas Laing )

Back in January (2016) I hosted a tasting night for a handful of friends, I posted some quick group notes, ( under tasting night ) anyway I always intended to post my own notes but alas didn’t get round to it.  So after having to convince myself to re try it ( ye right ) I poured myself a wee dram and re visited my notes and decided to do my review tonight.

This bottle is an Auchentoshan 14yo, single refill hogshead, 324 bottles were obtained and as all the single casks from Douglas Laing this has no colour and is Non chill filtered. It has been bottled as part of the Old Particular range and is bottled at 48.4%abv.

This is what Douglas Laing say about this range.

Douglas Laing’s Old Particular is a particularly unique series of individually hand-selected aged Single Cask Malts from all over Scotland. Each is bottled exactly the way the distiller intended: without colouring, or chill-filtration, thus allowing the cask and the naturally present oils, fats and enzymes in the spirit to make their own special contribution to its nose, mouthfeel, palate and finish. The result is as close as some come to experiencing that rarest of pleasures – sampling a dram straight from its cask in the hallowed surroundings of a distillery warehouse.

So on to the tasting…

Nose.. Quite floral to start with, blossom and fresh meadows and fruit orchards. Subtle honey and vanilla, with a little toffee aroma, the typical toshan nuttiness is there with a distinct oaky note lurking in the background.

Palate.. Opens up with a little more fruit than the nose suggests, green apple and pear with some orange peel and subtle lemon too. Some spice comes wondering in, cinnamon, nutmeg and some coconut is detectable.

Finish.. A typical toshan finish, not over long but fresh and floral.

Thoughts.. This is a very fresh, easy to drink expression and is very typical of what you get from the Auchentoshan distillery.  There are some lovely aromas and flavours and the added abv really does help to give this whisky the tick it deserves.  Douglas Laing bottles really do offer some great choices and thier range of toshans are always top notch. I remember on the night everyone enjoyed this and no wonder, it is delicious.
