THE DEVERON single malt hails from the coastal town of Macduff, which sits on the northern edge of Aberdeenshire. Macduff distillery resides in a favourable location on the banks of the River Deveron, just before its fresh waters flow out into the rough swells of the North Sea. Sheltered from the worst of the seaboard storms and winter winds, this tranquil spot has seen the creation of The Deveron malt whisky for many a decade. The river that gifts the malt its name is one of those enigmatic Scottish waterways known for the promise of great salmon and trout fishing. Rugged coastal scenery and rolling countryside also abound in this bracing part of the world. The herring industry gave rise to the bustling harbour in Macduff, today the town remains an important fixture for the fishing trade on the Moray Firth. It is also the last community in the country where deep-water wooden fishing boats are still built, an enduring and traditional craft that is echoed in the time- honoured practices of Macduff distillery. A short distance across the Deveron valley is the neighbouring town of Banff. With the river prone to winter fflooding, several failed attempts occurred to create a lasting crossing between the communities. An elegant seven-arched bridge was finally built in the late 18th century by John Smeaton, creating a span over the unpredictable river that connects the two towns to this day.
An uneven number of stills is unusual in a distillery; Macduff has five of the smallest copper pot stills in Scotland – two wash stills and three spirit stills. A further curiosity is the unique set-up of the spirit still lyne arms, which very slightly ascend before joining the horizontal condensers. They cool down and purify the spirit by enabling greater copper contact which leads to less sulphurous compounds. The distillation process and its unconventional condensers are arranged for a light, fruity spirit that results in a smooth, easy- drinking taste with sturdy apple notes, dried fruits and nuts. A rare coastal whisky, it’s sometimes said that it holds the tang of seashore air. Water sources are one of the most important factors when deciding where to site a new distillery. The water that goes into The Deveron malt whisky is taken from deep wells behind the distillery that are topped up by springs, whereas the water used to cool the machinery comes from the Gelly Burn, which then feeds into the River Deveron. Only high-quality Spanish sherry and American ex-bourbon oak casks, mainly hogsheads, are used for maturing The Deveron single malt. The specially selected casks impart depth to the delicate spirit, granting it a more rounded and smoother character.
This expression is bottled at 40%abv..
Nose.. This starts of with some sweetness, a little caramel, some toffee and delicate honey notes, under this there is hints of coconut and ripe pears, a little green apple and a malty undertone.
Palate.. Again caramel and toffee are first up, a hint of dried fruit and candied orange with some bitter chocolate. Towards the end there is some oak and vanilla with subtle spices making an appearance.
Finish.. A medium finish with oak and malty notes..
Thoughts.. A nice whisky, not overly complex but one that could easily be an easy to reach whisky, one that does not need to be given too much thought, maybe a good summer evening whisky when you just want to relax and sip something good.
