ONE OF SCOTLAND’S MOST NORTHERLY MAINLAND DISTILLERIES
With a history stretching back to 1826, Pulteney Distillery lies at the heart of its Wick hometown. One of Scotland’s most northerly mainland distilleries, it has been characterised by a spirit of endurance down the centuries – a spirit embodied by the unique malt whisky with which it has been so long synonymous.
Throughout the long and eventful history of Pulteney Distillery, the quality of both our whisky and the process by which we make it remains a source of pride to us all. The traditional craftsmanship deployed when the distillery first opened its doors in 1826 is what continues to characterise Old Pulteney single malt Scotch whisky nearly two centuries later.
WATER SOURCE
Throughout the long and eventful history of Pulteney Distillery, the quality of both our whisky and the process by which we make it remains
MALTING
Once brought in by sea, our virtually unpeated malt is now sourced from a selection of the UK’s foremost suppliers.
MILLING
Our four-roller Porteus mill is deployed to grind the malt into grist in 25kg batches.
MASHING
Built from stainless steel with a copper canopy, our semi-lauter mash tun will complete 19 mashes per week, with five tonnes of malt milled
DISTILLATION
Our two uniquely-shaped stills have long been a source of fascination, and indeed are the source of inspiration for our bottle shape.
FERMENTATION
The distillery houses six washbacks, five made of Corten steel and one of stainless steel, with a working capacity of 23,500 litres.
MATURATION
Our whisky owes much to the merits of the casks in which it matures, and we use both American oak ex-bourbon and Spanish oak ex-sherry casks
